Mind, body and soul: the benefits of walking to work
Today is Walk to Work day and, to celebrate, we’re extolling the benefits of strolling. You might not know it, but a few small steps can add up to a giant leap forward, for your mind, body and soul.
So, take a deep breath and put your best foot forward: you’ll discover a whole world of benefits waiting just outside your door.
Walking doesn’t take time: it makes time. And, with audiobooks, music streaming and podcast apps freely available, you’ll find you don’t need to be at your desk to be productive. By thinking ahead and getting out early, you’ll create space in your diary that you can dedicate to things you enjoy, whether that’s listening to music, catching up on the latest news and views, or immersing yourself in your favourite stories.
You don’t need a pricey gym membership to torch those surplus calories. So, leave the treadmill behind and get back down to earth. Walking delivers a host of health benefits, strengthening your heart, warding off dementia, and burning between 160 and 240kcals per hour. Plus, a dose of summer sunshine can do wonders, helping you to get your daily fix of that elusive Vitamin D.
Beautiful sights, birds singing, the wind in your hair: okay, perhaps we’re being a little idealistic, but there’s a lot to experience beyond the confines of your car or train carriage. Walking gives you the chance to see and appreciate the things you’d usually miss: to make your journey as scenic as possible, why not make a diversion and visit your local park? Or, if you’re on your way home, drop into a new restaurant or gallery. And remember, it’s a scientific fact that exercise boosts your mood: if you want to make Mondays a little less blue, just put on your walking shoes.
