Spotlight on Capita Employee Benefits: Tessa Blanchflower
Tessa, Senior Pensions Administrator, tells us why she’s been at Capita for 9 years, and where a Knickerbocker glory comes into it all.

I’ve been working at Capita for almost 9 years now, and I love my current role. As a Senior Pensions Administrator, I deal with the more complex cases and manage all incoming and outgoing work. I even have the chance to mentor newer members of the team and pass on my expertise. As a little side project, I’m currently developing spreadsheets that’ll replace handwritten pro-formas. It’s not something that’s strictly in my job spec, but it’ll save the team a huge amount of time. Plus, it means I have a reason to take advantage of the technical information on Capita’s intranet - something that’s a huge perk to everyone here.
I’m really keen to keep my skills as up-to-date as possible, and it’s something Capita are great at supporting. In fact, we’re actively encouraged to do so.
They’re big advocates of professional qualifications. Name the course and they’ll have it. And if they don’t, they’ll develop it. I’ve completed a Retirement Provision Certificate (RPC), and I’d be given study days if I wanted to continue further and take PMI exams.
It’s a fast-paced business, so we’re always evolving to keep up. But we’re supported along the way, and everyone has such an optimistic attitude. I know management would notice anything before it could become an issue. Recently, our Chief Executive realised that things were getting a bit hectic, so she arranged for an ice cream van to come to the office. Everyone had a treat on her (mine was a huge Knickerbocker glory). It’s those sort of things that make the culture here so friendly and supportive.
Because it’s such a dynamic environment, I honestly can’t think of a working day that’s ever been the same - or even anything that I would class as bad about the role. Although, it is never gets easier to speak to someone who has just lost a spouse. But you do learn how to offer support, and, if anything, it makes it that much more rewarding when you do get things sorted.
No matter how busy things can get, there’s always the chance to work flexible hours. You can come in as late as 10am, and leave as early as 4pm – providing you make the hours up. The office is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, so you really do manage your own workload. It’s a big perk. And I also love how many different places there are to eat around us. You can escape to Victoria Quays for lunch, and you even get 25% off as a Capita employee.
Capita are also really big charity supporters. For ‘dress down Friday’ everyone puts in a £1, and we have a ton of bake sales, raffles and competitions throughout the year. The biggest event is the annual team adventure day. Everyone gets dressed up in ridiculous outfits, and competes in silly activities.
At every stage of my 9-year career, I’ve felt supported, inspired and encouraged by Capita. The culture is something special, and I’ve got a feeling I’ll be very happy here for at least another 9 years…
