In 2013, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) chose Capita to manage and implement the national smart metering infrastructure, which is the world’s leading smart metering programme and one of the largest changes to happen to the British energy sector since privatisation.
Transforming the energy sector and how energy is supplied, smart electricity and gas meters will be used by competing suppliers to provide energy to our homes and businesses. Energy readings will be sent digitally to suppliers who will be able to offer a more secure and consistent service, avoiding complexity and duplicated costs.
Consumers will also benefit from smart metering where they will receive more accurate energy bills, reduced energy consumption and gain more control over their consumption levels, leading to lower costs and lower carbon emissions.
By 2020 it is estimated that 30 million smart meters will have been installed in homes and businesses across Great Britain. Our involvement will allow deadlines to be met in a cost efficient manner.
