Capita and Bexley contract

Capita and Bexley sign £14 million extension and expansion of existing contract

The London Borough of Bexley (Bexley) and Capita Local Government Services today announce they have signed a contract to extend and expand their existing partnership. The new contract, worth £14 million will extend the partnership by three years to June 2019* and will see the Council’s financial assessment team transfer to Capita Local Government Services.

Capita’s original contract with Bexley began in 1996 and today the breadth of services being delivered to the Council includes; council tax and business rates administration; cashiering services; benefits administration, and now the financial assessment service. The financial assessments team is responsible for the administration of applications for assistance towards residential care costs and costs for care packages delivered to citizens in their homes. There are currently just over 3,700 active assessment cases in Bexley.

Capita intends on leveraging its existing benefits home visiting team to enhance the financial assessments process and deliver an even more efficient service for the Council and residents.

In 2009, Bexley was awarded a Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) score of four for its benefits services. This is the highest possible rating and was achieved in partnership with Capita as a result of delivering continuous service improvements.

Cllr Colin Campbell, cabinet member for finance and corporate services, said: "In our drive to achieve better value for money we are always looking for smarter ways of working that can be used to save time and money. The new financial assessments and benefits team will deliver on both of these. By improving our organisation and systems, we are committed to making sure that every pound spent provides value for money and that every pound saved is directed back into front line services that people rely on each day."

Mark Chapman, business director, Capita Local Government Services, commented: “Our existing contract with Bexley has been a success and delivered efficiencies for the Council at a time when local authorities across the country are having to meet real financial challenges. The London Borough of Bexley’s decision to continue to work with Capita demonstrates its commitment to providing excellent customer services, even when purse strings have been tightened. We look forward to continuing this partnership and welcoming the new employees to Capita.”
