Ultra-Low Emission Zone goes live with technology designed by Capita

The Mayor of London has launched the world’s largest Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), using technology built and operated by Capita, to reduce the capital’s illegally high levels of air pollution.

The ULEZ replaces the existing emissions surcharge (the ‘T-charge’), so that vehicles travelling in central London will now have to meet new, tighter standards, or pay a daily charge. ULEZ is part of Transport for London’s commitment to help clean up the city’s toxic air, which has been linked to thousands of premature deaths in London each year.

This is part of Capita’s existing agreement with Transport for London (TfL), which involves the management of the TfL’s Congestion Charging Zone, and Low Emission Zone.

Capita has designed, implemented and now operates central London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) systems and business processes. The highly sophisticated technology we have built for TfL is a major step towards London becoming a zero-carbon city. In the first year alone, this is expected to cut dangerous nitrogen oxide emissions by 45%. Air pollution has been alarmingly high in London for far too long and we know that emissions from road transport is the single biggest problem. This is why the Ultra Low Emission Zone, which will cover around 100,000 cars, vans, HGVs, and coaches entering into the Congestion Charge zone every day, is vital to the future health of Londoners.
