Capita started a three-year partnership with Lambeth Academy in 2016 - a school based in south London - through Business in the Community’s Business class programme.
The partnership is an example of one of several community programmes Capita deliver in Lambeth, addressing local needs in the Borough.
We are working with the school on a number of initiatives throughout the academic year. One particular area of focus is on enriching student pathways as they transition from school, to work, apprenticeship training and/or further education.
Since the start of the partnership, Capita employees have offered their time and skills to support students with mock interviews, CV writing and presentation skills. We also invited 9 students into our Capita offices in July 2017 for a week’s work experience giving the students a taste of the world of work.
At the start of the 2017/18 academic year, we worked closely with the school to understand their needs and how we could support. We have prepared an exciting programme of support kicking off with our mentoring programme for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) students. Five volunteers are mentoring 16 students over a 6-month period, introducing students to the skills required at work, how to prepare a CV, the career opportunities in STEM and exploring the different career paths that the students could follow. The programme will end with a graduation ceremony in summer 2018.
It’s been a pleasure designing and facilitating the STEM mentoring workshops with such enthusiastic mentors and mentees. Being new to Capita, I was impressed with how our people are so willing to give up a few hours each month to support young people – sharing their knowledge of the world of work with future employees!
Corporate responsibility executive, Capita
The school wants to provide prospective parents with a preview of what the Academy could offer so together with Capita’s design team, students prepared a virtual tour of the Academy which we have recorded as a 360° video.
Over the next few months, we will be supporting Lambeth Academy teachers to better engage and communicate with parents through a ‘brainstorm’ session sharing our marketing and communication skills with the teachers. We hope to again invite Year 12 students into our offices for work experience in the summer.
Throughout all our activities we look to ensure Capita’s expertise is used to achieve maximum impact for the school, its students and people across our organisation.
