In just one year, we created over 1,000 ‘Dementia Friends’, delivered dementia awareness training to 60 employees and raised over £200,000. As our charity partnership with Alzheimer’s Society has come to a close, we wanted to reflect on what we have achieved in the past year.
Last year it was revealed that dementia is the leading cause of death in England and Wales and one of the world’s top 10 killers, but it remains the only one we cannot prevent, cure or even slow down*. Currently there are 850,000 people living with dementia and this is set to rise to 1 million by 2021.
Dementia will not only affect our clients and their customers, it will, or may already, impact you and your family.
Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. A Dementia Friend is someone that has learnt a little bit about dementia so that they can turn this new understanding into action, supporting customers and colleagues affected by the condition.
In February 2018, we launched our Dementia Friends Valentine’s Day campaign where we encouraged staff to become a different kind of friend by watching a 15-minute impactful video explaining the effects of dementia and simple things you can do to support someone who has it.
We are pleased to have created over 1,300 new Dementia Friends and trained 60 employees in dementia awareness in order to better prepare them for assessments and improve service provision. This training also resulted in the creation of a new Dementia Factsheet which is now used by all assessors
Our Dementia Friends video remains easily accessible on our intranet for all our employees.
Raising over £200,000
The goodwill of our people has seen us raise an impressive £200,000. The money is used to support the invaluable services that Alzheimer’s Society delivers. Across Capita, we have seen some fantastic fundraising activities.
Highlights include, 17 Capita employees trekking up Snowden at midnight, raising £20,000; our annual Capita Charity Week, which highlighted the importance of community investment; and, to mark the end of the year, we published our ‘Happy Memories’ cook book. We invited employees to share recipes that they associate with their own happy memory or that of a loved one who is living with dementia. Our CEO, Jon Lewis, also got involved submitting his mum’s apple and rhubarb crumble recipe.
We are delighted to have raised over £200k in our partnership with Alzheimer’s Society. Our employees have taken part in some fantastic fundraising initiatives. It has been a successful partnership and would not have been possible without the support from Alzheimer’s Society and the dedication of our employees. Well done to all involved.
