Performance and Development Business Partner Matt Lowis shares his experience navigating the precarity of the job market and his path towards finding resilience and motivation to spare.

His momentum has encompassed initial roles as Senior Pensions Adviser in Capita Experience and a Seconded Performance and Development Business Partner in Capita Public Service. He thrives in supporting colleagues in achieving their aspirational goals through personal development.

Capita has allowed me to move from strength to strength, allowing me to hone my skills and use them effectively, bringing motivation and a sense of purpose.

Tough times

Back in 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, I was made redundant by my previous employer. This came as a real shock for me, particularly as I was one year into having bought my own house. The financial concerns around this, along with my concerns around the pandemic, the insecure job market and not having applied and interviewed for a job is some years, really impacted my mental health. With sleepless nights and the onset of depression, I sought support from counselling, but this was not going to solve the issue, it only helped me to process and become more resilient.

An unexpected birthday present

Then one day, out of the blue, some friends that worked for Capita recommended that my skillset would be perfect for a job opportunity with the Capita Experience Pensions Solutions team. So, I applied, interviewed, and on my birthday that same year, I got the call that would allay all my fears—I had been successful! Thanks to these colleagues of mine, I felt secure in my life again. They understood my individual potential and had pushed me to apply for the role. Suddenly, I was employed and had an income to pay for my home, my dog, and the things I enjoy doing.

Paying it forward

I am truly grateful to these Capita colleagues, who have supported me in overcoming both personal and professional obstacles. Additionally, the support I have received at Capita, alongside other members of the LGBTQ+ community, has instilled me with so much confidence in the organisation. The support I have received with regard to my personal background, as well as Capita’s commitment to other marginalised groups, is something I have not had at previous organisations. I have even become a committee member of the Rainbow Alliance, so I can pay this forward to others joining the company.

Change for the better

Although it felt like the end of the world when I was made redundant, looking back, it actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise. My move to Capita has been one of the best things for my career and for my confidence. My advice to anyone considering a career opportunity with Capita: if you are looking for an organisation that supports its employees, even in the bad times, has a culture where colleagues look out for each other and promotes bringing your authentic self to work, then Capita is the place for you!
