Artificial intelligence is already shaping how defence organisations design, deliver and evaluate training. As the pace of change accelerates, the challenge is not whether to use AI, but how to embed it responsibly into complex, mission critical environments.

In this episode of AI in Action, industry leaders from across the defence training ecosystem share how AI is moving from experimentation into practical delivery. The discussion brings together perspectives from Capita, Raytheon UK and Varjo, with a focus on real world adoption across UK military training.

Adrian Morley from Project Selborne at Capita explores how AI is being embedded into Royal Navy shore based training to remove long standing operational bottlenecks. From optimised scheduling and adaptive learning pathways to AI supported instructor tools, the programme is helping deliver trained personnel to the front line more quickly, while maintaining quality, oversight and trust.

The conversation also examines how AI enabled content discovery is being integrated into structured training environments, supporting instructors and learners to access the right information at the right time. These capabilities are now moving towards pilot evaluation as part of wider platform modernisation, aligned to Project Selborne’s delivery objectives.

Looking beyond software, the episode considers how advances in immersive technology are improving realism and responsiveness in training environments. AI enhanced extended reality, synthetic environments and simulation are all playing a growing role in preparing defence personnel for operational readiness.

Despite the progress, all contributors agree on a shared challenge. Defence organisations must continue to build skills, streamline governance and modernise procurement approaches to keep pace with rapidly evolving AI capability.

As 2030 approaches, the organisations that embed AI safely into live training delivery will be best placed to build an agile workforce and strengthen long term operational resilience.
