We’ve probably all heard the statement: “people are the most important part of any organisation - the backbone of any company”. It makes sense that an organisation must value its people and ensure it looks after them as a key component to its success. But when we say people, we’re talking about a collection of unique and different individuals, all of whom not only work for an organisation but have personal lives that are affected by all the elements that make us human.
To value the people in an organisation, we must therefore think about all the components that make us happy humans, both in and out of work.
Thankfully, we know this at Capita, which is why we want everyone to be their brilliant, true self, every day. As the Group Head of Wellbeing, I am so pleased we are launching our #BeBrilliantBeYou campaign, which supports our corporate priority of ‘Unleashing our people’s potential’. It is all music to my ears!
When I talk about wellbeing, I’m talking about all its strands: feeling good and functioning well, experiencing positive emotions (such as happiness and contentment), developing your potential, having control over your life, a clear sense of purpose and experiencing positive relationships. There are so many factors that can impact these things: externally, personally and at work.
This is why our #BeBrilliantBeYou campaign is so great. We’re recognising how different and diverse our people are, celebrating the uniqueness of each and every one of us, whilst supporting and promoting wellbeing.
When I’m asked what our wellbeing offerings at Capita are, I like to remind people we all have a wellbeing responsibility each and every day: how we talk to each other, how we listen, how we show empathy, and how we support, encourage and value each other. These are wellbeing fundamentals and the #BeBrilliantBeYou campaign helps remind us to do this.
We encourage everyone to look after your physical wellbeing: to help you feel good and function well. We’ve run various awareness campaigns, wellbeing challenges, and everyone at Capita has access to online hearing checks and heart age tools as well as on-site clinics and events.
When it comes to mental health, we’ve got many resources to help you. From training to our employee assistance programmes, mental health first aiders to inhouse counselling – we want all our colleagues to feel supported and be able to create positive emotions.
Having control over your life also includes financial security, and we recognise the importance of financial wellbeing. We’ve got all sorts of support and benefits available to colleagues, to help in times of difficulty.
We also know there are many social factors that impact our wellbeing, and we support flexible working where possible to create a healthy work/life balance. We also offer volunteering opportunities, which we know helps boost self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction by giving you the chance to give something back.
I’m proud to be working for an organisation that is working so hard to enable our colleagues to be their brilliant, true selves every single day.
