Capita today announces that it is making all meetings screen-based by default, even after Covid restrictions end, as it looks to reduce corporate travel by 75pc by the end of the decade*.

Building on its successful hybrid working model, Capita will take a ‘virtual first’ approach to all meetings, be it focused work, regular team check-ins or client meetings. While office spaces will still be used for colleagues, clients, and partners to benefit from collaborative working, offices will be used carefully and appropriately to ensure people only travel when they need to.

This step forms part of Capita’s ambitious set of plans to be net zero across all parts of the business, including its supply chain, by 2035.

Other measures set out by Capita to achieve their net zero milestones include linking executive pay to climate commitments from 2022, as well as trialling technology that will allow colleagues to track their individual carbon footprint.

Capita’s hybrid working practices will be made more widespread, with 35,000 set to work more flexibly, even after Covid restrictions have ended.

The environmental benefits of this permanent shift to hybrid working are already becoming visible for Capita with corporate travel emissions reduced by 71% in 2020. By the end of 2021, the property footprint is set to be reduced by at least 25% over 2019 levels.

Capita will also be calling on its 24,500-strong supplier base to collaboratively tackle supply chain emissions, monitoring targets and supporting them to decarbonise their operations to ensure the company’s 2035 net zero milestone is met.

Jon Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of Capita, said: “I believe passionately that businesses have a vital role to play in helping tackle the climate emergency, and as leaders we must step up to drive through significant, sustainable changes to how our organisations operate.

“At the heart of our purpose at Capita, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint to get to net zero – and supporting our colleagues, clients, partners and suppliers to do the same.”

Capita’s science-based target approach sets out a roadmap to achieving net zero by 2035. The three-phase approach delivers operational net zero by 2025; operational and business travel net zero by 2030; and full net zero by 2035 including supply chain, ahead of the UK Government target of 2050.
