The Turing Scheme, which has been designed by the UK Government to provide global opportunities in education and training for students at UK universities, schools and colleges has opened registrations for schools, colleges and universities.

For the second year of the scheme at www.turing-scheme.org.uk Last year the Government announced the Turing Scheme would be funded for a further three years – and that Year 2 of the scheme will be backed by £110m.

The opening of registrations for the 2022-23 academic year, enables organisations to begin planning their applications to secure funding that enables students, learners and pupils, including those from disadvantaged and non-traditional backgrounds, to undertake study or work placements around the world.

Eligible organisations from every region and nation of the UK are being invited to register ahead of the opening of the funding application submission window – which starts 31 March and ends on 29 April.

Following registration, organisations can join webinars where they can learn more about the application process and sign-up to the new Turing Scheme newsletter to stay informed about it.

The Department for Education (DfE) has reconfirmed that grant rates will be the same level as the first year and that additional support will also remain in place for applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds. This will enable them to fund the costs of travel, passports and visas.

Capita was appointed to promote and administer the scheme by the DfE in December 2021. Administration of the scheme has moved from the previous provider’s platform to the Capita-developed digital grants management platform GrantIS. Capita will utilise its significant digital grants management, complex programmes and education expertise to deliver grants to tens of thousands of learners each year.

The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) has been appointed as principal partner and will lead on the assessment of applications and support with monitoring and evaluation, building on decades of expert knowledge and experience in delivering major international mobility schemes. Capita have also established an advisory group comprised of expert sector organisations, including the Association of Commonwealth Universities, who will help the scheme reach and engage target audiences. Members of the board include organisations from the social mobility, higher education, schools, further education and vocational training sectors.

Minister for Skills Alex Burghart said:

“The Turing Scheme is delivering our vision of a truly global Britain, by creating lifechanging opportunities for students from schools, colleges and universities in every region and nation of the UK to take up placements in countries all over the world. I am proud the Government has extended the scheme – backed next year by £110m – and urge every provider to consider registering to apply on the Turing Scheme website now.”

Costi Karayannis, Managing Director and Client Partner for Education and Learning at Capita, said:

“The opening of registrations is a key milestone in the application process for the 2022-2023 Turing Scheme. We are delighted to be working with the Department for Education and our education partners to help students from all backgrounds access global work and education opportunities.”

Dr Joanna Newman MBE, Chief Executive and Secretary General of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), said:

“The ACU is pleased to be working with Capita on the 2022-23 Turing Scheme, overseeing the assessment of applications and supporting with monitoring and evaluation. We look forward to drawing on our decades of expert knowledge and experience in delivering international mobility schemes, including managing the UK Government’s Chevening, Commonwealth, and Marshall Scholarship schemes, and the multilateral Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships (QECS), to help deliver transformative educational opportunities.”
